Marius Borg Høiby, 27, the eldest son of Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, has been accused of assault. The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, August 4th. The young man, whose mother had a relationship before her marriage to Haakon, the heir to the Norwegian throne, was detained for several hours by law enforcement before being released.
Princess Mette-Marit has temporarily postponed a trip to France due to the incident. Her husband, Prince Haakon, traveled to France alone. “She has acted as a mother and not as a princess,” said Caroline Vagle, a Norwegian reporter specializing in royalty. “This is a very tough matter for the whole family.”
The police confirmed that Hiby is the one charged in the case. The charges include physical and material damage. “There is a relationship between the accused and the victim,” the police statement read.
Marius has good family connections and has always been warmly welcomed by King Harald and Queen Sonja, Haakon’s parents. “One can imagine how difficult this situation is for all the parties involved,” Vagle said.
Marius, who is not part of the Norwegian royal family and has no official commitments, has two half-siblings on his mother’s side. His biological father divorced in 2019 from his wife, Celine Maktabi, with whom he had been married for 15 years. He has a son from that marriage.
