The Norwegian ski star Aleksander Aamodt Kilde is currently going through a particularly tough phase in his career: In July, he had to go to a clinic due to an infection in his operated shoulder. Now he is once again hospitalized instead of training for the upcoming season.
Kilde suffered the severe shoulder injury in January during the legendary Lauberhorn race in Wengen – a horror crash that not only jeopardized his season goals but now also casts a shadow over his plans for a swift comeback. At that time, the 31-year-old was in life-threatening condition. His fiancée, the ski icon Mikaela Shiffrin, recently stated that his fall has also profoundly changed her life.
Kilde is never short of jokes
Kilde, who is known throughout his career for his positive attitude and resilience, is trying to stay optimistic even in this challenging time and even makes jokes about his situation in his latest Instagram post: “If this is the most exciting part of your day, you know where I am right now,” referring to the electric lift function of his hospital bed.
“It’s slowly starting to feel like a never-ending story,” he admits. “I’ve been on antibiotics for three weeks already. I’ve had another infection, and it’s not over yet. Right now, I just have to keep fighting and keep doing the right things, but at the moment, it’s a struggle with myself.”
Comeback plans in jeopardy
The setback couldn’t come at a worse time as preparations for the upcoming season are already in full swing. Kilde was determined to come back strong after his fall in January, but now it seems his comeback is further away. Nevertheless, the Norwegian remains focused on his long-term goal of returning to the world elite of skiing.
While his fans and colleagues send him encouraging words and wishes for recovery in the comments, Kilde admits that it’s “a serious test of patience.” Among his well-wishers are big names like Stefan Hadalin, Mikaela Shiffrin, and Benny Karl.
At the end, Kilde humorously turns his gaze toward the future and bids farewell with the words “It’s not that bad,” lowers his headrest again, and lets a small smile slip through.
