Starting today, the tax card for the income year 2025 is available at skatteetaten.no.
More than three million people have accessed their tax card on the tax administration’s website. Your tax card shows how much tax will be deducted from your income before it is paid out.
– In the tax card, we calculate how much we believe you will earn, have in the bank, and other factors that affect your tax during 2025. Since the tax administration does not know everything about you, you must check that the information is correct so that you pay the right amount of tax throughout the year, says acting division director, Regine H. Vastvedt, in a press release.
Incorrect information may lead to back taxes
It is essential to check that the information in your tax card matches your income, deductions, assets, and debts in 2025. If not, you could end up with too high or too low a tax deduction, which could lead to either more tax than necessary or back taxes.
Check your tax card now, and be sure to do a follow-up check at least once more during the year. If you discover errors, you can easily make changes to your tax card.
– You do not need to do anything after you have submitted the changes. We will create a new tax card for you, and your employer, Nav, or others will retrieve this directly from the Tax Administration, says Vastvedt.
When should you check your tax card?
It is wise to check your tax card when significant changes happen in your life. This can affect how much tax you pay.
– If you experience a salary change, go on sick leave, buy or sell a property, or retire during 2025, you should consider changing your tax card, explains Vastvedt.
Other events that might lead to changes in your tax card could be if you take out more or less in loans or if the interest rate on your loan changes.
The Tax Administration warns
On Monday, most Norwegians will receive notifications that their tax cards are ready to be checked. This is exploited by scammers engaged in phishing.
– The Tax Administration never sends unsolicited links in emails or SMS, says Tax Administration’s security director Ragna Fossen in a press release.
Always log in to Skatteetaten.no or Altinn.no to ensure that you are not a victim of fraud.
– The best protection against fraud is that you yourself go to skatteetaten.no or altinn.no and log in there. All our electronic communication with taxpayers that involves sensitive information happens while logged in via skatteetaten.no and altinn.no, Fossen explains.
Check if the information is correct
On Monday, December 16, notifications will be sent to everyone with income or wealth that their tax card is ready and should be checked. You must, as always when we send out notifications, go to skattetaten.no or altinn.no and log in to verify that the information we have about you, your wealth, and income is correct, the tax administration informs in the press release. The Tax Administration takes such fraud attempts seriously and regularly reports them to the police.
The Tax Administration has created a list of tips on what you should do if you have received an email that looks like a fraud attempt:
- Do not provide any of the requested information, or respond to SMS or email that you are unsure about. Do not click on links or attachments, but delete the email.
- If you have provided card and code details that were requested from such a fraudulent email, contact your bank and block the card and accounts as quickly as possible.
- Feel free to forward suspicious SMS or emails to [email protected]. This enables us to detect new variants more quickly.
- You can also contact the police. Here you can get advice on what to do next.
You can now earn up to 100,000 kroner tax-free
Starting next year, the tax exemption limit will increase from 70,000 kroner to 100,000 kroner. This means that you can earn up to 30,000 kroner more than today without having to pay tax. If you earn less than 100,000 kroner in 2025, you will need a tax exemption card so that tax is not deducted from your income. Anyone who had a tax exemption card in 2024 will automatically receive one for 2025.
According to the Tax Administration, it is particularly young people who take advantage of the tax exemption card.
If you already know that your income will exceed 100,000 kroner in 2025, it is wise to order a tax card instead of a tax exemption card. If you earn more than 100,000 kroner without having a tax card, your employer will have to deduct 50 percent tax from your salary. If you pay too much tax, you will get it refunded next year.
While you can use a tax exemption card and earn under 100,000 kroner tax-free, it is important that the income is reported correctly. Everyone over the age of 13 earns pension from the very first krone they earn.
