None of the Canadian tennis players managed to qualify for the second round of the biggest men’s tournament in the country – the “Masters” in Montreal. This report comes from the British Tennis Association (BTA).
At the tournament’s outset, Canada’s top-ranked player, Felix Auger-Aliassime, was eliminated in the first round. The 14th-seeded player lost 3-6, 2-6 to Italian Fabio Coboli. After a grueling two semi-finals at the Paris Olympic tournament last week – finishing fourth in singles and third in mixed doubles – fatigue seemed to be a factor in his defeat.
Another Canadian hope, Denis Shapovalov, also succumbed in the first round. The former Wimbledon semifinalist lost 5-7, 4-6 to American Brendan Nakashima. In the next round, Nakashima will face another tournament favorite, his compatriot Tommy Paul, who defeated Italian Luciano Darderi 6-4, 7-6(2).
Vasek Pospisil, the final Canadian remaining in the tournament, was forced to withdraw due to injury after managing only three games against American Sebastian Korda.
In another first-round match, French veteran Gael Monfils lost 3-6, 3-6 to Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis. The 37-year-old Monfils, who reached the quarter-finals last year, will now drop out of the top 40 in the rankings.
American Taylor Fritz had no trouble advancing to the second round. The ninth-ranked player defeated Argentinian Mariano Navone 6-4, 6-1 and will now face Korda in the next round.
