Not even Lula has free lunches

Incidentally, if there is one thing that Lula taught us, it is that he is quick and pragmatic in adapting to the results that need to be obtained. Despite the initial fear, in Lula’s first terms he was quick to put on the “suit”, to understand the laws of the market and to conform to the bases of the modernization of the Brazilian economy, launched by Fernando Henrique Cardoso. Lula is a romantic, idealist but he is no “choir boy”. Countries have interests and despite all the rhetoric, the Brazilian President behaves in the corridors of power as a leader of a capitalist country.

But that has consequences. Lula needs financing from China and the new bank for development now created and “led” by Dilma, where in fact the Chinese Communist Party is in charge. For that, Lula had to go to Beijing to make the genuflection we all saw, even if it cost him any space to discuss his dream of becoming a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.

Lula may well try to give the impression that his concern is peace and his ambition is to moderate a solution to the conflict, but in fact Lula needs renminbi to finance his projects. That alone explains why he was more incisive than the Chinese leader himself in relation to the role of the EU in this conflict initiated by Russia.

Along the way, the Brazilian President attacked the European Union and the United States, blaming them, that is, us, for prolonging the war in Ukraine. Blaming the European Union is the same thing as blaming Portugal, not only because we are effective members of the EU but above all because, despite António Costa’s initial hesitations, we fully endorse the Union’s positions regarding the conflict.

In this chapter there are several serious problems provoked by Lula, in particular when his visit to Portugal on the occasion of the April 25th celebrations approaches. Hence, it is opportune to clarify several details of Brazil’s foreign policy that collide with Portuguese foreign policy. So far nothing surprising, we cannot pretend that Brazil does not belong today to the “axis of evil”. By the way, Lavrov’s presence in Brasilia is a clear confirmation that the new Brazilian government does not mind serving as a headboard for the liars and criminals of the Putin regime. Disappointment with Lula is only those who have been too distracted.

I think it’s great that Lula comes to Portugal, just as I would have liked Bolsonaro to have come. Brazilians are sovereign in their choices just as we are in ours.

The ties between Portugal and Brazil are much more important than any President or Prime Minister and in fact, unlike Bolsonaro, Lula has always treated Portugal well. It is another thing to turn a deaf ear to the positions of the Brazilian President that shock us or that target us directly or indirectly.

It is for this reason that I consider it necessary to ask Lula:

Do you consider that Portugal and the European Union are responsible for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine?

If it is clear to you that Ukraine must give up Crimea and Donbass, is Brazil willing to cede any Brazilian state to Portugal?

Do you understand that it is wrong for Western countries to give Ukrainians equipment to defend themselves and protect them from Russian attacks?

Do you consider Ukraine responsible for starting the war and the Russian invasion?

Is Brazil willing to send protective equipment to the Ukrainian people?

Is Brazil willing to support the reconstruction of Ukraine?

More than missing the ceremony with President Lula in Parliament, perhaps it would be more opportune to be present, defend our foreign policy of support for Ukraine and peace, condemn Russian behavior and that of its allies and, if possible, side by side with the carnation red put a symbol of Ukraine (if there are no blue and yellow carnations).
