Alizé Cornet has never managed to impose his game on Camilia Giorgi. THOMAS SAMSON / AFP
Disappointing and completely overwhelmed, Alizé Cornet logically lost in two sets against the Italian Camila Giorgi.
Alizé Cornet, who was participating in her 19th Roland-Garros since 2005, could not overcome the first obstacle on Sunday, beaten 6-3, 6-4 by the Italian Camila Giorgi. The 59th in the world was logically beaten by the 37th. “I don’t have the feeling of having done much on the Central, so there is a bit of disappointment, inevitably, not to have been able to express myself as I wanted. Especially since I had a small opening in the second, which I didn’t exploit. She was starting to make more mistakes, I felt better… Then I got out of the game a bit, I panicked a bit. She has quite an oppressive game. I was starting to find the rhythm, and then I lost it. It’s true that I didn’t serve very well either. It wasn’t great tennis on my part. She, she made her match. The public pushed me but there, it was not enough.»
The 33-year-old Frenchwoman has reached the round of 16 twice in Paris, in 2015 and 2017. But since then she has lost three times in the first round (2019, 2021, 2023). She had given up during the last Fortnight in the third round against the Chinese Qinwen Zheng. It is therefore Giorgi who will face in the second round the American Jessica Pegula (3rd) or her American compatriot Danielle Collins (46th).
Cornet, who holds the record for the number of Grand Slam tournaments played in a row (65 since Australia 2007, Wimbledon 2020 having been canceled due to Covid), had risen for the first time – and the only one to this day- in the quarter-finals in Australia in 2022. But in 2023, it is no longer advancing. Did she play her last Roland-Garros? “I don’t know. We’ll see. The season is long. The 20th, that would be a year from now. A lot can happen in a year, many, many things. I’ve had a lot of ups and downs in my career. I’m still here, despite everything. Despite all the downs there have been, I’m still here. There, it is a somewhat complicated period, indeed. But I learned that it could come back, that sometimes you have to be patient, to keep working. From there to project myself over a year… Already, I will try to finish my season, until the US Open, as it should be, to do things well. Afterwards, the urge, of course, cannot be controlled.»
