Smiltene region has joined the regions of Latvia, which for some time do not have a council chairman. At yesterday’s city council meeting, none of the proposed candidates agreed to run for this position, and a temporary solution was found – the current deputy mayor for cultural and social affairs, Astrida Harju (JV), will be the acting chairman. She, like MPs Gita Mūrniece and Dainis Aċeksējevs from the Latvian Development Party (LA), refused to run for office right away. On the other hand, no candidate was even nominated from the National Union (NA), represented by the former council chairman Edgars Avotiņas, even though the political force has the most mandates.
It should be reminded that 15 deputies from five lists were elected in the 2021 municipal elections in Smiltene district. NA won the most – five seats, LA has four seats, while Progressives, New Unity (JV), as well as the joint list of the Union of Greens and Farmers and the Union of Regions of Latvia have two seats each.
“I have already mentioned to my colleagues, if you see an opportunity to entrust me with this job, then I would like to perform this position as acting chairman of the council for one month, as stipulated in the legislation.
