Unlike in the United States, severe weather in Japan does not feature abnormally low temperatures. Still, many parts of northeastern Japan reported three times the average snowfall for the season.

While Japan copes with the weather, in the United States the death toll from the unusual cold storm has risen to 34, according to the New York Post. It was also reported that close to two million American citizens are cut off from electricity due to the extreme weather.
