The Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) stands in solidarity with its partners from the National Coordination of Articulation of Black Rural Quilombola Communities (CONAQ) and deeply regrets the passing of Antônio Bispo dos Santos, Mestre Nêgo Bispo, quilombola leader and one of the main intellectuals of our era.
In 2022, Nêgo Bispo generously offered his words to ISA employees at an internal training event, and left his mark with fundamental reverberations on the thinking of traditional peoples and communities.
Quilombola from Quilombo Saco-Curtume, in São João do Piauí (PI), throughout his career he became a pillar on the fronts of disseminating knowledge and the quilombola struggle.
His striking rhetoric reveres his masters, makes scathing criticisms of colonialism and leaves a legacy of appreciation for quilombos and their territories, inseparable in their essence.
In a note, the Conaq Education Collective states that he learned a lot from the thinker. “We will continue to preserve the organic knowledge that he dedicated himself to building and defending a quilombola education based on experience within the quilombola territory.”
And he ends the tribute with two of his lapidary phrases:
“We are the beginning, the middle and the beginning.” “We need to learn to come home.” – Nego Bispo.
