The Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) regrets the death of the physicist and general director of the Amazon Museum (Musa), Ennio Candotti.

Musa is one of the main centers of culture and science in Manaus (AM), and occupies 100 hectares (1 km2) of the Adolpho Ducke Forest Reserve, of the National Institute for Amazon Research (INPA).

Without the enthusiasm of the professor. Ennio Candotti, it would not have been possible, in 2012, for a team of three indigenous organizations from the Tiquié River and the ISA to join forces with MUSA to carry out the Fish and People exhibition. He was present in all its design and assembly phases.

The exhibition, inspired by the book of the same name, organized by Aloisio Cabalzar, from ISA, took fishing practices and traps to Manaus, in addition to telling stories of the ingenuity and imagination of indigenous peoples of the Upper Rio Negro.

“The fish are human fish”, said Manuel Azevedo, Tukano leader, in text published in the exhibition catalog. He thus concisely expressed a central idea for understanding the relationship between these people and fish: that of symmetry between them and us, we are all people.

For anthropologist Melissa Oliveira, who was also part of the exhibition team, “building an exhibition with Professor Ennio was an exercise in creativity and freedom. The Amazonian people, their knowledge and the region’s biodiversity lose a great ally.”

More recently, ISA and MUSA have been involved in other joint projects, such as Parinã, a research program in archaeology, anthropology and history of the Rio Negro.

ISA offers solidarity to Candotti’s family and friends, partners on the journey through science, the Amazon and its people.
