Instituto Socioambiental (ISA) mourns the death of Angelita Proporita Yanomami and sympathizes with her family’s mourning. Ex-wife of Dário Kopenawa, vice-president of Hutukara Yanomami Association, Angelita, 35 years old, was found dead in Boa Vista, Roraima. She leaves two sons and a daughter.
Angelita worked as a translator at the Casa de Saúde Indígena (Casai) and at the Nossa Senhora de Nazaré maternity hospital in Boa Vista, in addition to being a powerful voice in defense of the rights of Yanomami women and all their people. She was studying dentistry and would complete her graduation this year, with the aim of returning to the territory and serving the Yanomami people.
In Angelita’s memory, ISA claims that the investigations into what happened will continue rigorously until justice is served. In accordance with Yanomami culture, ISA will not publish images of Angelita and advises that the same behavior be adopted by other people, institutions and media outlets.
