More than five years after the fire, Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris will reopen in December. As with other famous churches, a (free) ticket is now required to visit.

Paris.

In order to better manage the flow of visitors expected when Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens, the Diocese of Paris is introducing online reservations. As the diocese announces on its website, visits are also free.

Booking months in advance is not possible, but a few days before you can visit the famous church, which was mostly destroyed in a fire in April 2019.

Notre Dame has more visitors than the Eiffel Tower

The Diocese of Paris (the word, like diocese, stands for ecclesiastical administrative area) is expecting 15 million visitors a year when it reopens on December 8th – compared to 10 million before the devastating fire.

In comparison: the Eiffel Tower has around 6.3 million visitors in 2023, the Louvre around 8.9 million.

Thousands are waiting every day

40,000 people are expected every day, as the person responsible for audience management at Notre Dame, Sybille Bellamy-Brown, specified. Online reservations are therefore strongly recommended.

The restoration work is not yet fully completed and will continue after the Gothic building is reopened.

According to the diocese, the construction work on the flying buttresses will take another four to five years, and the work on the square around the cathedral will take at least three years. (dpa)
