Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust dismissed four more staff members for inappropriately accessing medical records of the victims of the June 2023 Nottingham attacks, bringing the total number of dismissals to 15 amid ongoing data protection investigations.
Four additional employees lost their jobs following an internal probe at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, pushing the total count of fired workers to 15. The investigation centers on the unauthorized viewing of confidential files belonging to Barnaby Webber, Grace O’Malley-Kumar, and Ian Coates, who were killed by Valdo Calocane on June 13, 2023. Valdo Calocane was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 ahead of the attacks, while three other victims—Wayne Birkett, Sharon Miller, and Marcin Gawronski—survived their injuries.
Disciplinary Actions and Warnings Issued by Nottingham Trust
The trust confirmed the latest dismissals alongside a broader tally of disciplinary measures taken across multiple hospital departments. Beyond the 15 firings, administrators issued 15 final written warnings and two first written warnings.
Family Reactions and Regulator Involvements
This was just gross voyeurism at the worst possible level.

Sanjoy Kumar said:
I am appalled, it’s time to get a handle on these failures.

Trust officials reported that they notified the victims’ families of the findings alongside Nottinghamshire Police and the Information Commissioner’s Office.
New Safeguards and Future Record Protection Systems
In response to the breaches, Dr. Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH, emphasized that unauthorized record viewing carries zero justification.
There is simply no excuse for accessing the records of a patient without a legitimate reason, and I hope this sends a really clear message – we will investigate and we will take action.
Dr Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH
We will continue to investigate inappropriate access to these records and take action as and where necessary.
Dr Manjeet Shehmar, medical director at NUH
Dr. Shehmar noted that while the actions of these staff members are disappointing, the individuals represent only a small proportion of the wider workforce, and personnel across the trust are listening, learning, and working to ensure that only lawful and justified access occurs in the hospitals.
