Nouakchott: Kick-off of the work of the Morocco-Mauritania Economic Forum

Organized by the General Confederation of Moroccan Enterprises (CGEM), in partnership with the National Union of Mauritanian Employers (UNPM), this Forum aims to promote economic and commercial relations between Morocco and Mauritania, in sectors of interest common areas such as agriculture, agri-food, fishing, industry, renewable energies, trade and tourism.

This 3rd edition, placed under the theme “Towards an innovative, sustainable economic and commercial partnership with a strong impact for the entire African continent”, succeeds those of Nouakchott in 2018 and Casablanca in 2022. It intends to give a new impetus to the dynamic of economic cooperation between the two countries through the realization of strategic projects and common opportunities identified during previous forums.

Speaking on this occasion, the President of the UNPM, Mohamed Zine El Abidine Ould Cheikh Ahmed, considered that the Forum constitutes a suitable opportunity to better seize economic opportunities in the two countries, strengthen the bilateral partnership and promote investments with a view to to establish a major and productive hub in this strategic region open to sub-Saharan, European and American markets.

In this regard, the president of Mauritanian employers encouraged the two business communities to take up the challenges and inject the necessary dynamism into the vital sectors of the two countries, stressing that the road map is now clear and that the doors are open to Moroccan and Mauritanian operators to work on more partnerships and exchanges.

Mr. Zine El Abidine Ould Cheikh Ahmed thus expressed the hope that the Forum will lead to positive results which strengthen the partnership between economic actors and enhance economic relations between the two countries to the aspirations of their leaders, His Majesty the King Mohammed VI and President Mohamed Cheikh El Ghazouani.

For his part, the president of the CGEM, Chakib Alj, underlined the importance of the economic partnership between Morocco and Mauritania, highlighting its solidity as well as the strong desire of the two countries to make these relations a model of partnership Maghreb, regional and African, sustainable, innovative and job creator.

“It is undeniable that our common history and our close ties, based on fraternity, proximity, respect, trust and economic complementarity, constitute key arguments for seizing the investment opportunities that Morocco and the Mauritania,” he added.

And to recall that Morocco is the first African investor in Mauritania in key sectors such as telecommunications, banking, processing and valorization of fishing products, agriculture, production of cement and construction materials, the distribution of domestic gas, as well as the distribution of petroleum products.

“These achievements are very positive, but we can go even further,” he said, calling for strengthening the partnership in the priority sectors of agriculture, agri-food, fishing and energy. , health, and logistics infrastructure. As such, Mr. Alj expressed the desire of the Moroccan business community to explore investment opportunities in Mauritania.

Furthermore, Mr. Alj encouraged Mauritanian entrepreneurs to invest in Morocco and take advantage of the current dynamics of the Kingdom to access new markets, especially with the implementation of the New Investment Charter and the Mohammed VI Fund. for Investment which offer numerous incentives to Moroccan and foreign investors.

The first day of the Forum ended with the presentation of the Moroccan-Mauritanian Business Council, and the business climate of the two countries by their respective investment promotion agencies.

This business forum was marked by the participation of the Moroccan ambassador in Nouakchott, Hamid Chabar, the Mauritanian ambassador in Rabat, Ahmed Ould Bahiya, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Mauritania, Abdessalam Ould Mohammed Salah, and more than 300 Moroccan and Mauritanian business leaders operating in different sectors.
