Concessionaire Nova Rota do Oeste deployed automated artificial intelligence monitoring across the BR-163 highway in Mato Grosso, scanning 500 cameras along an 850.9-kilometer stretch from Itiquira to Sinop to detect stopped vehicles, accidents, and wrong-way driving in real time since March 2026.
On the 850.9-kilometer stretch of the BR-163 highway managed by Nova Rota do Oeste between Itiquira and Sinop, detecting stranded vehicles or roadway hazards quickly is a persistent safety challenge. Every day, an average of 200 drivers require assistance for mechanical breakdowns, accidents, or towing. To catch these incidents before they trigger secondary collisions, the concessionaire integrated automated artificial intelligence into its monitoring infrastructure.
Automatic Incident Detection Technology Across 500 Cameras
The core of the upgrade is an in-house tool called the Automatic Incident Detection system, known by its Portuguese abbreviation DAI. Developed directly by the concessionaire, the software analyzes video feeds from 500 cameras mounted throughout the entire concession corridor. When the software spots an anomaly—such as a vehicle halted directly on the pavement or traffic moving against the flow—it immediately generates an alert for operators stationed at the Operational Control Center.
Once operators verify the alert on their monitors, they dispatch the appropriate response units. Depending on the situation, the control center deploys inspection vehicles, ambulances, tow trucks, or water trucks. This workflow cuts down the elapsed time between an incident occurring and emergency services arriving at the scene.
Operational Changes From Phone Calls to Continuous AI Surveillance
Before the automated system went live, detecting a stalled vehicle relied heavily on manual reporting or routine patrols. Drivers or passengers had to place a phone call or send a WhatsApp message to the concessionaire’s dedicated hotline number, 0800 065 0163, or hope that one of the 19 inspection vehicles continuously patrolling the highway happened to drive past. The AI deployment supplements those traditional channels by providing continuous, automated oversight across the entire route.
A vehicle stopped on the roadway immediately becomes a potential risk to everyone,
Wilson Ferreira told Gcnoticias and Sonoticias.
According to Wilson Ferreira, director of operations and technology at Nova Rota do Oeste, the initiative represents an effort to incorporate advanced global technology standards into the regional corridor. The executive emphasized that the primary value of the software lies in how quickly digital detection translates into physical protection on the asphalt.
“Nova Rota looked for references in the most advanced technology available in the world to improve the BR-163. Artificial intelligence expands our ability to identify incidents and act with greater assertiveness, but the main differentiator lies in how this innovation translates into greater safety and quality in customer service,” Wilson Ferreira told Gcnoticias and Sonoticias.
Nova Rota Do Oeste Upgrades Mato Grosso Infrastructure
The introduction of automated incident detection is not an isolated project. The deployment forms part of a wider infrastructure overhaul led by Nova Rota do Oeste to upgrade travel conditions across Mato Grosso. Alongside the video analytics software, the modernization package incorporates full-length videomonitoramento and the installation of 4G mobile connectivity along the highway corridor to expand communication access for motorists.
