Nova: What the deal means for subscribers on their sports channels

by time news

With the aim of dealing with piracy which is constantly spreading, but also with the development of the pay TV market, COSMOTE NOVA they reached a three-year agreement for the exchange their sports channels.

As newmoney.gr writesthis means in practice from the next sports season (the agreement comes into force on August 23) COSMOTE TV – NOVA TV subscribers will be able to access the sports channels of both platforms at an additional cost, since the sports material. .

For example, a COSMOTE TV subscriber, with an additional charge of three euros (in addition to the current nominal price of the COSMOTE TV packages, for example the Cosmote Sports Package currently 25 euros and the Total Package 28 euros), will be able. to watch all the sports content on NOVA TV, for example the games of the Stoiximan Super League teams that have the rights (PAOK, Aris, Asteras Tripoli, Atromitos, Panserraikos, Levadeiakos) or the games in the Premier League and the basketball games in the EuroLeague of Panathinaikos and Olympiakos, among others. It goes without saying that the final price varies depending on the package a subscriber has (eg Triple Play, Double Play, Internet connection speed, etc.)

Accordingly, NOVA TV subscribers, with an additional fee starting from 1 euro and in combination with the packages they have or choose, will be able to watch COSMOTE TV sports content. Specifically, NOVA has announced that it will offer this sports content at prices from an additional €1/month only:

– New Fiber EON+ joint plans with Internet speeds from 50 Mbps to 1 Gbps, from €47/month

– New EON+ TV program for €28/month

– Nova subscribers for fixed Fiber plans for €21/month.

The agreement has other extensions, beyond its commercial aspect, of course, mainly business – that is the attempt to limit the operating costs borne by OTE and United Group (the owner of NOVA).

It is noted that this commercial agreement applies to residential customers of both companies and not to professional accounts/subscriptions, ie coffee shops, sports bars, etc., ie places of catering and entertainment, where customers watch matches and where different charges by their owners. from subscription providers.

In addition, it is important to say that this content sharing is not something new but is an international practice that can also be found in large markets for example in Great Britain with Sky and British Telecom. But also in Greece before the time, NOVA had made an agreement with VODAFONE TV regarding the provision of sports content.

Piracy and taxes – It aims to increase subscribers

COSMOTE and NOVA aim to increase their subscribers and income through this commercial partnership, which will be done in order to take a share of the illegal market, which is still strong despite the efforts.

Today, it is estimated that there are between 600,000 and 800,000 subscribers to the piracy platforms in the country (illegal channels, streaming services through illegal devices and/or via the Internet) for subscription. Although the Greek subscription platforms invest millions to obtain national and international rights, they do not manage to recoup what they spend, and their total revenue loss amounts to at least 125 million euros per year. This condition has the effect of reducing investments in new material. Piracy has also led to a reduction in Greek state revenues, with annual losses estimated at 75 million euros.

So according to information, the two companies that have long developed a very close cooperation in matters related to combating pay TV piracy have recently been in discussions to reach a commercial agreement focused on sports content, at prices that leave that it is more expensive for a certain subscriber. to choose the solution to the pirated “box” and the “subscription” that pays illegally for unauthorized content. As the executives of the two companies explain, with the new commercial partnership, for a consumer, in addition to being dangerous and dangerous, it will be financially unprofitable to choose a pirate network to access the sports content of one of the two platforms. We think that in this way there will be an additional incentive for Greek consumers who prefer the legal way to watch sports and not just content, according to typical executives of both companies.

Finally, it should be noted that there is an additional cost of dealing with COSMOTE and NOVA and the other pay TV providers, namely the pay TV tax, which is often characterized as unfair since it distorts the Greek market and puts Greek platforms. at a disadvantage compared to international streamers, of course the slightest does not pay.
