London: Former world number one Novak Djokovic entered the men’s singles semi-finals of the Wimbledon tennis tournament on Wednesday after Alex de Minaur withdrew due to a hip injury. Ninth seed De Minaur of Australia announced his withdrawal from the tournament hours before his quarter-final match against Djokovic on Centre Court.
“Of course this is not the announcement I wanted to make. I am devastated,” De Minaur said at a press conference. He said he heard a “crack” during his 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 win over Arthur Fils in the fourth round on Monday. De Minaur cautiously walked to the net when the match ended but later downplayed the seriousness of the situation when speaking to the media.
With this walkover, Djokovic reached the Wimbledon semi-finals for the 13th time and thus equaled Roger Federer’s record in men’s singles. Second seed Djokovic has won seven of his record 24 Grand Slam titles in men’s singles at Wimbledon. To make it to the final, Djokovic will face the winner of the match between Taylor Fritz and Lorenzo Musetti on Friday.
