Novak Djokovic tames the Nick Kyrgios tornado to win his 7th Wimbledon – Liberation

by time news

The Serb overcame the tempestuous Australian in almost three hours of play and four sets: 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. Djokovic thus signs his 21st Grand Slam victory.

And seven for Novak Djokovic. This Sunday, the Serbian tennis player, number 3 in the ATP ranking, won his seventh Wimbledon against the turbulent Australian Nick Kyrgios. After losing the first set, “Nole” won the next three to finally win in nearly three hours 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6. It will therefore have been necessary to fight for the one who for the first time lifted the trophy of the London tournament on grass in 2011. “Djoko” won, by the way, his 21st Grand Slam title and is therefore only a small unit of the record holder Rafael Nadal and his 22 victories. The Spaniard, competing on the courts of the All England Lawn Tennis Club earlier this week, was forced to forfeit before his semi-final because of an abdominal tear.

If “Djoko” won, it was nevertheless the Australian, 40th player in the world, who showed the most legs from the start of the match. Kyrgios, qualified in the final without having played the slightest half in a Grand Slam tournament (thanks to Nadal’s package), is dangerous from the start by multiplying the “aces” – for some exceeding 200 km / h. After 31 minutes and winning services, the outsider won the first set 6-4 taking advantage of a slightly amorphous Djokovic.

Kyrgios’ Wrath

The Serb wakes up little by little and manages to counter the mines sent by his opponent. The triple defending champion saves 4 break points, enough to win the second set (6-3) after 1 hour 10 minutes and restart the final. It will then take him 50 minutes to win the third set (6-4), marked by a fight in the stands, against a catchy Kyrgios capable of chaining aces or magnificent shots but also double faults. After leading 40-0 in 4 games everywhere, the Australian cracks and sees Djokovic coming to break it. Kyrgios then goes into a rage and blames his team for not having encouraged him enough. Proof that the match is particularly disputed, the Serb will have to go until the decisive game in the 4th set to overcome the Australian.

Before the meeting, the two finalists – who did not always get along well, far from it – promised on Instagram on Saturday to meet after the match at the restaurant both. “If you invite me for a drink or dinner, I accept. And the winner of tomorrow (Sunday’s final) will pay”, dropped the Serb to his competitor. Which obviously accepted the proposal. After his defeat, Nick Kyrgios can at least console himself by eating by eye because it is Djokovic who will have to pay the bill.
