Libyan novelist Hisham Matar has achieved a new accomplishment to add to his distinguished literary career, as his latest novel, “Friends,” was selected for the longlist of the 2024 International Booker Prize.

According to the Wall Agency, “This nomination comes a few months after the same novel won the George Orwell Prize for Political Writing, which highlights the literary and political importance of this novel.”

“Friends” revolves around the writer’s journey to Libya after the revolution, and his search for the truth about his father’s disappearance. The novel deals with important issues such as freedom, democracy, and identity. The novel was widely acclaimed by critics, who praised Matar’s distinctive narrative style and his ability to address complex issues in a courageous and moving way.”

“The International Booker Prize is one of the most prestigious literary awards in the world, and is awarded annually to the best novel written in the English language, which opens up broad horizons for Matar to reach a wider global audience.”

The longlist for this year’s Booker Prize includes 13 novels from around the world. The novel was chosen from among 156 nominated novels. The shortlist, which includes six novels, is scheduled to be announced next September, and the winner of the prize, which is worth 50 thousand pounds sterling, will be announced in November of the same year.
