Whatever the case, devotion to the Mother of God under the invocation of the Virgin of Almudena, also called “Santa María de la Vega” or “The Admirable Conception”, has accompanied the people of Madrid for almost two thousand years.

At the beginning of the 8th century, faced with the imminent Arab invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, which occurred between the years 711 and 714, the Christians of the town hid the sacred image to avoid its desecration.

Centuries later, in 1085, when King Alfonso VI reconquered Madrid, a procession was organized to celebrate the victory, with him at the head. Upon reaching the city wall, part of the stone framework of the wall collapsed, revealing the place where the image of the Virgin had been hidden. Tradition says that the image of the Virgin was flanked by two lit candles. That happened on November 9, 1085.
