London: England announced on Tuesday that Test team coach Brendon McCullum will also take charge of the ODI and T20 teams from early next year, as part of a change in the leadership structure. The busy international schedule had made it difficult for one person to play both roles with short and long format matches sometimes taking place at the same time. McCullum and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) believe this is now possible due to changes in the calendar. McCullum’s contract has been extended till 2027.

McCullum said, ‘The idea of a unified coaching structure, especially with the relaxation of the schedule next year, is absolutely perfect. I am excited by the prospect of guiding both teams and am grateful for the support I have received from the ECB and my family to take on these additional responsibilities.’ Matthew Mott resigned as England’s limited overs coach on 30 July. Under his guidance, the team failed to defend the ODI and T20 world titles. The Australian was the coach for two years and under his guidance, England won the T20 World Cup in 2022.
These two giants were also contenders
Multiple-time Australian world champion captain Ricky Ponting and Eoin Morgan, who led England to their first ever championship in 2019, were two other main contenders for the head coach’s job. After taking over as England’s Test coach in May 2022, McCullum showed little interest in the white-ball format. His ‘badball’ mindset did a different job. Now the white-ball team captained by Jos Buttler will also see a change in the coming times.
