New Delhi: The government has implemented strict rules for furniture used in public places like malls, airports, hospitals, educational institutions and restaurants. According to this step taken for fire safety, only such fabrics must be used in these furniture which are fire resistant. The government is trying to protect life and property through this. The Textiles Ministry said in a statement that under the Quality Control Order (QCO) from October last year, now the cushions and fabric of chairs and sofas used in all such public places including religious places, museums and underground shopping complexes should be as per the rules of the Bureau of Indian Standards. According to the ministry, this rule related to QCO will also apply to fully finished furniture or its parts imported for use in public places. However, on the request of the industry, exemption has been given for this till March 31, 2025.

The ministry said in a statement, “The government is committed to ensuring fire safety in public places. This commitment is reflected in this decisive step. The government wants to ensure that all non-domestic furniture follows the highest standards of quality and safety, thereby protecting life and property.”

The Textiles Ministry said in its statement, “BIS certification is voluntary for many products, but it is now mandatory for the fabric used in furniture to be fire resistant. This regulation is an important step to provide better protection to public spaces and ensure the highest safety standards for the furniture used there.”
