The Narva Symphony Orchestra held a protest action last Sunday against a reduction in the budget for its maintenance and development. The musicians performed Symphony No. 45 by the Austrian composer Haydn, which is called “Farewell,” and left the hall one by one, writes RUS.Delfi.
According to the artistic director and conductor of the Narva Symphony Orchestra, Anatoly Shchur, musicians cannot go on strike, but with the help of art they can convey their wishes to those who make decisions.
“We performed this symphony so that people would pay attention to us,” said Shchura after the concert. – Nothing has changed for 15 years. And I received notification that there would be a serious reduction in the budget allocated for the activities of the orchestra. We already live modestly, but in order to develop further, we must at least preserve what we have.”
Anatoly Shchura and the musicians hope that deputies, city officials and ministry specialists will hear them, just as the Hungarian Prince Esterhazy once heard his musicians and created better working conditions for them. “We want to continue our activities,” added Shchura. – We now play 9-11 concerts a year. And that’s with the additional funding I’m looking for. And with a reduced budget we will be able to give a maximum of 6-7 concerts a year. And we will have to reduce the rehearsal time. This means that the quality of the concerts will suffer.”
According to the conductor, classical music is played either well, or there is no need to perform it at all. Anatoly remembered someone’s statement that a civilized city must have a symphony orchestra and a hockey team. “There’s no need to spread yourself thin, you need to set priorities,” the musician noted. – I’m not saying that we are the most important. It is up to the deputies to decide how they see the development of the city. Is serious art needed in Narva?“
