WhatsApp is a popular instant messaging platform. Which is used by crores of users. WhatsApp is used for sending photos, videos and large files as well as for audio calling and messaging. Apart from this, online money transactions can be done with the help of WhatsApp. This UPI service of WhatsApp is known as WhatsApp Pay, but the service may not be very popular, but now anyone can use this service, because the capping on it has been removed.

NPCI removed the limit from WhatsApp pay
UPI payment service WhatsApp Pay has been offered by WhatsApp for a long time, but a limit was imposed on WhatsApp by the National Payment Corporation of India i.e. NPCI, due to which only a limited number of people can use the WhatsApp Pay service. Were able to do so, but now this payment limit has been abolished by NPCI. After this, WhatsApp will be able to add more number of UPI payment users. The facility of WhatsApp Pay service has started from January 1, 2025.

UPI payment market share

If we talk about India’s digital payment market, PhonePe dominates the UPI payment market. PhonePe’s share in India’s total UPI market is about 48 percent. After this comes Google Pay with 37 percent market share. Also, Paytm is present at the third position, whose market share is around 17 percent. But WhatsApp has about 50 crore user base. In such a situation, the user base of WhatsApp Pay may increase in the coming days. Which is very big and hence WhatsApp can go far ahead in the digital payment market.

When did WhatsApp payment service start?

Meta owned WhatsApp payment service was launched in February 2020. Meaning, it has been almost 4 years since this service started. However, after this, the userbase of WhatsApp Pay is very less in the UPI payment market. However, due to removal of NPCI’s limit cap, increase in market share can be recorded.

Who will be able to make WhatsApp UPI payment?

Only those users will be able to use WhatsApp, whose mobile number is linked to their bank account. Also, you will have to use WhatsApp only from the mobile number linked to the bank account, only then you will be able to use WhatsApp Pay service.

How to make payment through WhatsApp

  • First of all you have to open WhatsApp.
  • After this you will have to visit the chat to which you have to send money.
  • At the bottom side of the chat, you will see the rupee symbol, which you have to click on.
  • Then you have to tap on Get Started option for Add your bank account.
  • After this you have to click on Accept and Continue option.
  • Then you have to select your bank.
  • After this you will have to register your mobile number.
  • Then you have to click on the Send button of the message option.
  • In this way your mobile number will be directly connected to WhatsApp Pay.

Whatsapp’s 100 million limit

Earlier, NPCI had allowed the expansion of WhatsApp Pay in a phased manner. However, now after the relaxation of NPCI, there may be a jump in the number of WhatsApp users. NPCI had set a maximum limit of 100 million users in the year 2022 for security reasons. After this, NPCI gave some relief to WhatsApp by changing the limit of Rs 100 million to 30 percent market share. WhatsApp allows users to send and receive money without changing the app. Users will be able to make UPI payments directly from WhatsApp. For this you will not need a separate PhonePe or Gpay app.
