NPP Youth Wing Petitions Security Over Owusu Bempah Allegations

The Ashanti Regional Youth Wing of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has petitioned state security agencies, according to Asaase Radio, following claims made by Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah. The petition was addressed to the Director-General of the National Security Secretariat, the Director-General of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI), and the Inspector-General of Police, as reported by Asaase Radio.

The action stems from allegations by Prophet Isaac Owusu Bempah, the founder and leader of Glorious Word Power Ministry, who stated that Dr Nana Ayew Afriye—the Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore—planned to mobilise members of the NPP Nasara Wing to attack him and his church. According to Asaase Radio, the prophet allegedly linked this purported plan to his prophecies concerning NPP flagbearer Mahamudu Bawumia.

Youth Wing Rejects Claims and Calls for Investigation

The Ashanti Regional NPP Youth Wing, which identifies Dr Ayew Afriye as its patron, rejected the allegations as wicked, false and entirely without foundation, according to Modernghana. The petition, signed by Ashanti Regional Youth Organiser Martin Ameyaw, stated that the MP had never issued any instruction, directive, or encouragement to the Youth Wing, the Nasara Wing, or any individual to attack the prophet or his church, as detailed by Asaase Radio.

Describing Dr Ayew Afriye as a peaceful and disciplined politician who has exercised restraint, the Youth Wing argued that the remarks went beyond political or theological commentary. As noted by Asaase Radio, the group stated in its petition, What he has now done, in our respectful submission, goes beyond commentary or prophecy: it is a direct and public allegation of criminal conspiracy against a sitting Member of Parliament.

The group is asking security agencies to invite Prophet Owusu Bempah to substantiate his claims with evidence, and to take appropriate legal action if the allegations are found to be false and intended to incite public disaffection, cause fear and panic, or damage the MP’s reputation, according to CitiNewsroom.com. Furthermore, the petition requests security protection for Dr Ayew Afriye, noting that the accusations could expose him to public hostility or reprisal.

Wider Party Condemnation and Warnings

Other wings of the NPP have also responded to the situation. The Ashanti Regional Nasara Wing condemned the utterances, stating that the allegations are a serious indictment of the wing, which focuses on unity in diversity and the mobilization of settler communities, according to Modern Ghana. The Nasara Wing issued an ultimatum for a retraction and an apology, while calling on ecumenical bodies such as the Christian Council of Ghana, the Ghana Pentecostal and Charismatic Council, and the Catholic Bishops Conference to call the prophet to order.

Additionally, the NPP Women’s Wing in the Ashanti Region, in a statement signed by Regional Women’s Organizer Beatrice Owusu, cautioned Prophet Owusu Bempah against attacks on Dr Ayew Afriye and Dr Bawumia, urging him to focus on his calling to the pulpit rather than pursuing an unwarranted agenda, as reported by GhanaWeb.
