It has been reported that Britain may impose a strict condition that only international students studying science, mathematics and engineering can bring their dependents to Britain. A report said foreign students without higher education such as a master’s degree or Ph.D. could be barred from bringing their families.

The number of overseas students coming to Britain to study and then bringing their family members has increased eightfold. According to immigration statistics, visas were issued to nearly 5 lakh students last year. 135,788 people, including their dependent spouses and children, came to Britain. In 2019, the number was 16,047.

Of these, 161,000 Indian students went to Britain, including 33,240 relatives of students who went to the UK from India last year. Also, more than 160,000 migrants are awaiting the results of their visa applications, the report said.

However, a report said the government is yet to take a final decision on the controversial matter. Home Secretary Sulla Braverman has set out plans to reduce Britain’s immigration numbers. This includes reducing the length of time foreign students can stay in Britain.

However, the Department for Education has said that tightening restrictions on overseas students would bankrupt UK universities, as overseas students are their main source of income. According to estimates, international students contribute £35 billion a year to the economy.

International students and their dependents who study in the UK contribute to the UK economy not only through fees of between £10,000 and £26,000, but also through NHS surcharges of £400 per year per student and £600 per dependent per year.

If bans are imposed on work visas for graduates, Indian students will start moving to countries like Australia and Canada, the education department has warned the government, and eventually there could be a huge impact on student enrollment in the UK.
