“We all know the respected general Steponavičius very well, a really serious officer of ours, who has done a lot in recent years at the defense headquarters, accomplished a lot”, – Minister of National Defense Laurynas Kasčiūnas introduced the candidate during the NSGK meeting.

“One of the areas where we really need to strengthen now (…) is representation at NATO, where, of course, all regional plans are also located. Now we will go to operational, lower-level matters, where a very strong representation will be needed,” the minister added.

In turn, the candidate M. Steponavičius explained to the committee members what works he sees as priorities.

“The main priority, I think, will be deterrence and defense.” What the minister mentioned is our strategic plans, regional plans, their feasibility. And the most important process related to that is NATO defense planning, which would include the development and generation of those capabilities needed for defense plans (…)”, M. Steponavičius said during the meeting.

The candidate also emphasized the importance of air defense and the need to pay attention to the empowerment of the military forces.

“The most important thing in the field of empowerment is to work in the field of mobility – so that the forces can redeploy, arrive at the designated areas on time and, of course, be equipped. Thus, another direction in this field of empowerment would be the advance redeployment and deployment of ammunition,” he emphasized.

However, one of the biggest priorities, according to M. Steponavičius, is the revision of NATO’s command and control structure at the strategic, operational and tactical levels.

The military representative, his deputy and assistant are appointed by order of the Minister of National Defense at the recommendation of the commander of the army, subject to the written approval of the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
