Nuclear applications: Morocco and the IAEA strengthen their partnership

Vienna – The Director General of the National Center for Nuclear Energy, Science and Technology (CNESTEN), Hamid Marah, and the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Mariano Grossi, signed two important partnership agreements in Vienna on Monday.

The signing ceremony, which was held on the sidelines of the Agency’s 68th General Conference, was attended by the Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, Leila Benali, and the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of Morocco to International Organizations in Vienna, Azzeddine Farhane.

The first agreement relates to the second renewal, for the period 2025-2029, of CNESTEN’s recognition as an international collaborating center in the use of nuclear and isotopic techniques in three areas: water resource management, environmental protection and industrial applications.

The second agreement, for its part, concerns the development of skills and capacities in the areas of radiological safety, transport safety, radioactive waste safety, as well as nuclear security.

The objective is to meet Morocco’s growing needs in terms of socio-economic development with better sustainable management of its resources, while ensuring the continued sharing of its knowledge and experience, particularly with African countries.

On this occasion, the IAEA Director General presented Mr. Marah with two distinctions recognizing CNESTEN as a collaborating center of the Agency in peaceful nuclear applications.
