Eiffage is indeed the first construction group to benefit from the French nuclear recovery plan: the group announced this Thursday evening the signing of a contract with EDF for the civil engineering work on the first two EPR2 reactors at Penly ( Seine-Maritime). The formalization of this market had been awaited for several days.

Its value exceeds 4 billion euros, said Eiffage, already well known to the French for having built the now famous Millau viaduct. In Penly, a completely different colossal project now awaits the construction group (76,300 employees; 20.3 billion euros in turnover last year), chosen by EDF following a consultation dating back to 2019.

Domes 70 meters high

The site, which must be the subject of preparatory work from mid-2024 – subject to administrative authorizations being obtained by EDF -, includes the construction of two production units including 69 structures. Included, among other things, in the program is the construction of the enclosure for each of the reactors, i.e. a dome with a height of 70 meters and a diameter of 50 meters, as well as machine rooms. Eiffage was also entrusted with the construction of an operational building on six levels with 15,000 m2 of floor space. In fact, the group will have to deploy its range of professions to carry out all of its tasks. In addition to civil engineering, Eiffage is, among other things, active in construction, electrical, industrial, climate and energy engineering, and even metal construction.

Overall, its Penly site will mobilize up to nearly 4,000 people simultaneously, indicates the group, which also specifies that 1.3 million hours of work will be reserved for the integration and employment of people in disability situation.

In June, when announcing the choice of the Penly power plant for the construction of two EPR2 type reactors, EDF indicated that it was aiming for entry into service by 2035-2036, a timetable which however needs to be refined. Like the cost of the project, the full cost of the two reactors was estimated at 16.9 billion euros based on audits carried out in 2019 and 2021.
