The call launched on Saturday by around twenty countries to triple the capacities of nuclear energy in the world by 2050 illustrates the spectacular revival of interest in the atom.

Until now, at global climate conferences, the word “nuclear” was virtually taboo. His followers did not risk proselytizing. The climate emergency, the geopolitical upheavals and the resulting energy sovereignty issues have contributed to changing the situation.

The call launched on Saturday at COP28 is proof of this: around twenty countries led by the United States are committed to tripling nuclear production in the world by 2050 compared to 2020. They are going even further than the forecasts from the International Energy Agency, which expects a doubling of production capacities by 2050. And the initiative (non-binding) brings together both nuclear powers like France or Canada, and countries which do not currently have any reactors like Poland or Ghana.
