The number of people without a job rose slightly in August. The unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent.

The number of unemployed people in Germany rose by 63,000 to 2.872 million in August compared to July. Compared to August of the previous year, the number is 176,000 higher, the Federal Employment Agency in Nuremberg announced. The unemployment rate rose by 0.1 points to 6.1 percent compared to July.

“The labor market continues to feel the effects of economic stagnation. Unemployment and underemployment have continued to increase during the summer break,” said the Federal Agency’s CEO, Andrea Nahles.

The demand for workers in companies is also declining. According to the figures, 699,000 vacancies were reported to the employment agencies in August. That is 72,000 fewer than a year ago.

Short-time work is on the rise. Reliable data on the actual use of short-time work is available up to June. In that month, the Federal Employment Agency paid short-time work benefits for 232,000 employees. In May, the figure was 215,000, and in April, 223,000.

Things are looking more favorable on the training market. From October 2023 to August 2024, 418,000 young people applied for a training position. That was 10,000 more than in the same period last year. In August, 82,000 had not found a training position or an alternative. At the same time, 158,000 of the total of 502,000 apprenticeships were not yet filled.

The number of applicants who have not yet been placed and the number of open training positions will decrease significantly by the end of September, and the market will continue to move, the Federal Agency said. For the statistics, the Federal Agency used data that was available up to August 14.
