Monday, July 15

Awaiting the debut of Rafael Nadal, reported to be in great shape, the tournament starts with Cameron Norrie’s victory over Slovak Jozef Kovalik: 7-6(4), 6-4.

Another match of the day saw Pavel Kotov triumph over Chilean Cristian Garin: 6-4, 6-7(6), 6-1.

Tuesday, July 16

Continuing in the first round, Nuno Borges eliminates Andrea Pellegrino: 6-2, 7-6(3). Roberto Carballes Baena, feeling confident, takes out Russian Roman Safiullin: 5-7, 7-6(3), 6-3.

Duje Ajdukovic, a qualifier, wins against a struggling Luca Van Assche: 6-3, 6-3. Thiago Monteiro dominates Federico Coria: 6-1, 6-3.

The match of the day pitted Rafael Nadal against Leo Borg, the son of legendary Björn Borg. Unsurprisingly, the Mallorcan wins: 6-3, 6-4, but the Swedish hope, 21 years old, ATP 461, put up a good fight.

Sumit Nagal eliminates another local player, Elias Ymer: 6-4, 6-3. Young Henrique Rocha knocks out Argentine Camilo Ugo Carabelli: 4-6, 6-2, 6-2. Timofey Skatov notches a nice victory against Taro Daniel: 6-7(7), 6-2, 7-6(4).

Argentinian Thiago Agustin Tirante eliminates Jaime Faria: 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 and Kazakh Denis Yevseyev, 31, ATP 160, springs a surprise on Alexandre Muller: 7-5, 7-5.

Wednesday, July 17

Moving on to the round of 16 with unexpected Croat Duje Ajdukovic, emerging from qualifying, winning against Russian Pavel Kotov: 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-3.

A little later, Brazilian Thiago Monteiro, ATP 85, who is having a great clay season, takes down Casper Ruud, decisively: 6-3, 6-3.

Roberto Carballes Baena logically eliminates Denis Yevseyev: 2-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Late in the evening, we witness the second big surprise, the victory of world No. 121 Thiago Agustin Tirante against Andrey Rublev: 7-6(5), 3-6, 6-4. The 23-year-old Argentine scores the biggest win of his career.

Thursday, July 18

Continuing with the round of 16, Nuno Borges defeats his compatriot Henrique Rocha: 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Timofey Skatov, a qualifier, ATP 223, the tournament revelation, pulls off a big upset by eliminating Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor: 1-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Mariano Navone crushes Indian Sumit Nagal: 6-4, 6-2.

Rafael Nadal, who logically took his time to get into his rhythm, easily overcomes Cameron Norrie, showing intermittent flashes of impressive play: 6-4, 6-4.

Friday, July 19, Quarterfinals

Thiago Agustin Tirante 🇦🇷 vs Roberto Carballes Baena 🇪🇸 : 6/3 2/6 7/5

Ranked 121st in the world at the start of the week, the 23-year-old Argentine continues his remarkable run by eliminating the Spanish specialist after 2h15 of play. Tirante, who hadn’t done much since April, reaches the semifinals of an ATP 250 for the first time.

Timofey Skatov 🇰🇿 vs Nuno Borges 🇵🇹 : 4/6 3/6

Very solid, the No. 1 Portuguese, 27 years old, ATP 51, logically passes the Kazakh challenge.

Rafael Nadal 🇪🇸 vs Mariano Navone 🇦🇷 : 6/7 (2) 7/5 7/5

This much-anticipated match between the legend and the 36th-ranked player lived up to expectations. Facing a Nadal preparing for the Olympics, the 36th-ranked player produced an impressive performance, quickly identifying Nadal’s weak point, his backhand.

The Argentine played well, but obviously the Mallorcan adapted and found the mental and, above all, physical resources to prevail after 4 hours of play. Nadal could have closed it out sooner as he led 5/2 in the decisive set.

Duje Ajdukovic 🇭🇷 vs Thiago Monteiro 🇧🇷 : 6/2 4/6 6/4

A completely crazy week for the Croatian qualifier, 23, who, in full confidence, finds the resources to fend off the formidable Monteiro and earn the right to face king Rafael Nadal.

Now ranked 110th in the world, Ajdukovic has gained an impressive 200 places in just 12 months.

Saturday, July 20, Semifinals

Thiago Agustin Tirante 🇦🇷 vs Nuno Borges 🇵🇹 : 3/6 4/6

On cloud nine since the start of the week, Borges clearly dominates his Argentine rival to reach the final, which will simply be his very first.

Rafael Nadal 🇪🇸 vs Duje Ajdukovic 🇭🇷 : 4/6 6/3 6/4

Let’s applaud the superb tournament of the Croatian who falls gracefully against a Rafa true to himself. Not yet at his peak, he fights like a lion to secure the victory after 2h12 of effort.

He returns to the final of a tournament for the first time since Roland Garros 2022, which already feels like a great victory given his physical state just a few months ago.

Sunday, July 21, Final

Nuno Borges 🇵🇹 vs Rafael Nadal 🇪🇸 : 6/3 6/2

A dream day for the excellent Portuguese who won his first career title against one of his idols. Not at all impressed, Borges clearly dominated the play against a Nadal lacking energy.

The 6h15 spent on court against Navone and Ajdukovic was too much, and the Mallorcan never managed to move properly. He also showed once again his current limitations on the backhand.

For the Spaniard, the will is always there, but his long period of inactivity hasn’t yet allowed him to play at his best level, if that’s even still possible.

“I don’t know what to say. I think I’ve been waiting for this moment for quite some time,” Borges said in his post-match interview.

“It’s crazy, in tennis, it doesn’t always happen when you expect it. I know we all wanted Rafa to win, a part of me wished that too, but something even bigger in me really worked today.

It was not about playing my best tennis, but about playing well in the hot moments, and I managed to do that very well. I’m really happy overall. I don’t really know what to say, I’m very emotional.”
