Jean-Luc Mélenchon can “no longer claim to be the one who embodies the whole of the left and ecology”. The first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure, displayed this position this Tuesday regarding the leader of La France insoumise (LFI).
He specifies, on France Inter, that he will propose to the national council of the PS, this Tuesday evening, “a moratorium” to “obtain a clarification” without which the socialists “will no longer participate in the intergroup of the Nupes”, the electoral alliance of the Nouvelle Popular ecological and social union, at the National Assembly. This decision comes after the refusal of LFI executives to designate Hamas, in power in the Gaza Strip, as a “terrorist” organization after the deadly assault launched on October 7 in Israeli territory.
For his part, in a tweet posted this Tuesday morning, Jean-Luc Mélenchon insisted that Olivier Faure “is breaking up the Nupes for personal matters about me regarding Israel/Palestine”. “I can only repeat here the slogans that I adopted with which Faure and the PS disagree: ceasefire, release of hostages, humanitarian corridor, end of the blockade of Gaza, condemnation of all war crimes and trial of criminals by the ICC, UN political solution with two viable states with secure borders, non-aligned France,” listed the leader of La France Insoumise.
Ten days after the Hamas attack, “I’m furious,” the socialist leader protested on France Inter. “For the past week, what have we been talking about? We are talking exclusively about rebellious France, which at one point refused to qualify Hamas as a terrorist organization, which is obvious. “I can no longer stand these controversies, these diversions which prevent the left from being heard,” he sighs.

“There is a subject today with the Mélenchon method, because it effectively leads the left into a form of stagnation,” insists Olivier Faure. He criticizes “the strategy of conflictualizing everything,” of “permanently antagonizing,” of the three-time presidential candidate.
“The problem is that it no longer only divides the right from the left, but it also divides the left, and that’s the problem,” he adds. “I am an architect of what is still called the Nupes, a supporter of the united left. We should have made progress a year ago. We are going backwards and it is the National Front (Editor’s note: now the National Rally) which is increasing”

Demanding a “more democratic functioning” of the alliance to achieve “a common candidacy for the 2027 presidential election”, he called for “a dialogue” with those who are “ready” to “build the gathering on the foundations clear”. He also calls for “putting an end to a strategy that is leading us into a wall”. “We asked for a sixth Republic, it is not to have a new Jupiter (Editor’s note: in reference to a nickname given to the President of the Republic, Emmanuel Macron). Created in June 2022 for the legislative elections, Nupes allowed the left to have 150 deputies in the National Assembly. But it is also faced with multiple crises.
