Nupes presents its government program with 650 measures and 33 “shades”

Jean-Luc Melenchon presents the program of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union, in Paris, on May 19, 2022.

“That’s a mouthful, isn’t it? »made, all perky, Manuel Bompard, the lieutenant of Jean-Luc Mélenchon, while contemplating the areopagus of the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) gathered to unveil, Thursday, May 19, its “shared program” of government. The plan of attack with a clearly stated objective: to impose cohabitation on Emmanuel Macron after winning a majority in the National Assembly after the legislative elections (June 12 and 19).

Indeed, at the podium, there were many heads, all very enthusiastic, all neatly lined up behind the conductor of the Nupes, doubled with the title of master of ceremonies of the day, the leader of La France insoumise (LFI ), Jean-Luc Melenchon.

Olivier Faure, first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Julien Bayou, national secretary of Europe Ecologie-Les Verts (EELV), or even Ian Brossat, the spokesman of the French Communist Party (PCF), had come to publicly initial their wedding contract. Fifteen days after the birth of the Nupes, everyone took the floor to detail this common program rich in 650 measures. Of which the most emblematic: minimum wage at 1,500 euros net, retirement at 60, price freeze, advent of a VIe Republic, citizen initiative referendum… Julien Bayou welcomed a project “built in a fortnight, in less time than it took for Macron to find a prime minister”.

We must never lose sight of the fact that it is indeed the “rebellious” who are at the helm of Nupes. And that it is indeed Jean-Luc Mélenchon who will be proposed as head of government to Emmanuel Macron, in the event of a majority on the left at the Palais-Bourbon. The 650 proposals therefore emanate from an ideological base largely fixed by the presidential program of LFI. They register “in a controlled, reasoned, but firm break”, explained Mr. Mélenchon, to put down the “system in which we live, a system of indifference and ecological irresponsibility, of economic and capitalist predation, and of negation of democracy”.

“Unity is not fusion”

All these political partners, irreconcilable a month ago, are now called ” colleagues “. To show the most credible harmony, the Nupes took care to indicate, black on white, the axes of residual divergences. Olivier Faure recalled that he was not “it’s not easy to do in three weeks what we haven’t been able to do for many years”. There remain thirty-three programmatic points which are the subject of « nuances », according to the term officially validated by the Nupes, and which, in the event of too intense hubbub, will be arbitrated by the Parliament, once the left in power.
