According to the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH)the person responsible was Dr. José Castro Villagrana. In 1931, while he was director of the Hospital Juárez de México, he stated that Nurses were a gift from the Three Wise Men to the sick. Therefore, he chose this special date to recognize his work.

In 2021, a decree was published in the Official Gazette of the Federation to standardize the anniversary in Mexico. In this way, now the official date to pay tribute to nursing staff is May 12 to coincide with the international date.

Despite the above, the celebration is conventionally maintained on January 6. Although beyond the date, any day is ideal to celebrate and congratulate all nurses.

Curious facts about nursing staff

May 12 is commemorated internationally because it is the day of the birth of Florence Nightingale, who is considered the precursor of modern professional nursing. The stripes that nurses have on their caps indicate their hierarchy. According to the Nursing Human Resources Administrative Information System, there are currently just over 300 thousand registered nurses in Mexico. The IMSS alone has a staff made up of 120,423 people who daily provide hospitalization care to beneficiaries at the three levels of care. The vast majority of nursing staff is made up of women because they make up 85 percent of the total staff. According to the Ministry of Health (SSa), Mexico City, the State of Mexico and Jalisco are currently the entities with the most nursing staff in the country.
