The German nutrition report is compiled every year. The minister presented it today. Animal welfare is becoming more important to Germans.

According to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, consumers in Germany are paying more attention to animal welfare, regional windows and the EU organic seal when it comes to food than in previous years. The desire for more transparency must be taken into account, said Agriculture Minister Cem Özdemir (Greens) at the presentation of the 2024 Nutrition Report in Berlin.

“Our citizens decide for themselves how they eat, no one needs to lecture them or give them rules. That sounds like a given, but unfortunately in recent years we have increasingly seen food being used as a political tool,” said Özdemir. People want “real freedom of choice, and we support that – based on valid data.”

For the nutrition report “Germany, how it eats”, the opinion research institute Forsa surveyed around 1,000 people in Germany aged 14 and over in May 2024. This is now the ninth annual survey of this kind.

According to the ministry, almost twice as many people pay attention to the animal welfare label when shopping as in 2015: their number has increased from 36 percent to 65 percent. For the EU organic label, the proportion rose from 47 to 59 percent in the same period. At 39 percent, significantly more people also buy vegetarian or vegan alternatives to animal products more often. In 2020, this figure was 29 percent.
