Czech Duo Nouza and Rikl Reach Australian Open Quarterfinals in Historic Run

A remarkable performance at the Australian Open has seen Czech pair Petr Nouza, 27, and Patrik Rikl, 27, advance to the quarterfinals – a Grand Slam best for the duo. The team secured their place after a stunning victory over the No. 2 seeded British-Finnish team of Henry Patten, 30, and Harri Heliövaar, 36, with a score of 7-6, 7-6.

The Czech duo’s success builds on their previous best Grand Slam result at Wimbledon last year, demonstrating consistent improvement in doubles competition. This quarterfinal appearance marks a significant milestone in their careers.

Dominating Performance Fuels Quarterfinal Berth

Nouza and Rikl have been in formidable form throughout the tournament. Their journey began with a three-set win against the French pairing of Terence Atman and Alexandre Müller. They followed this up with a decisive victory over Argentines Maxim González and Andrés Molteni, and a win against their fellow Czechs, Tomáš Macháč and Matěj Vocel.

Against Patten and Heliövaar, the Czechs showcased exceptional composure, never facing a break point throughout the entire match. They expertly navigated both sets to tie-breaks, demonstrating a remarkable ability to perform under pressure. In the first set, from a score of 3-3, they controlled four out of five crucial points. The second set saw them successfully defend three break points in a pivotal third game, ultimately turning the tide in a shortened game after eliminating a set point. After two hours of intense competition, they celebrated a hard-fought victory.

Davis Cup Call-Up Reflects Rising Status

The success of Nouza and Rikl has not gone unnoticed by Czech national team captain Tomáš Berdych. The duo recently received their first-ever nomination to the Davis Cup team for the upcoming match against Sweden, scheduled for February 7 and 8 in Jihlava. This nomination is a testament to their current form and a clear indication of the confidence Berdych has in their potential. “They have rightly earned their place on the team,” a senior official stated.

Their next challenge will be against American Christian Harrison and Brit Neal Skupski in the fight for a spot in the semifinals.
