An unofficial version of Nvidia’s DLSS 5 technology leaked through an early-access build of NBA 2K27, allowing modders to extract the neural rendering library and run experimental graphics features across several PC games ahead of its expected official release.

What began as an early-access release for a sports title quickly turned into an unexpected preview of Nvidia’s next-generation graphics pipeline. Participants in the beta/early access discovered that the game includes what users believe is an early, experimental version of DLSS 5, dubbed Nvidia DLSSNR. Members of the RenoDX modding channel on Discord reportedly found a way to extract the DLSS Neural Rendering file and apply it to Control before it expanded to other games, as reported earlier by Notebook Check and VideoCardz.

How the Unofficial DLSS 5 Mod Alters Familiar Games

With the files extracted, enthusiasts began testing the software in games including Skyrim, Cyberpunk 2077, Grand Theft Auto V, GTA: San Andreas, Palworld, and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Video demonstrations across the web show that the shader system can substantially alter lighting, textures, shadows, and facial details. In Control, different settings changed the appearance of protagonist Jesse Faden’s face, becoming more and less defined as they tweak various DLSS 5 settings enabled by the RenoDX modders. With the Neural Uplift setting disabled within the mod, Jesse’s face has a smooth, uniform look, but as soon as the modder turns this feature on with one of the presets, her face becomes paler, with more visible laugh lines and what looks like more makeup smudged beneath her eyes. Demos in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas showed changes to both character detail and environmental lighting, applying a filter effect to CJ’s face and enhancing textures across the city while making shadows on CJ’s face and his surrounding environment more pronounced as the city’s lighting changes from a warm to a cool tone. Several other videos are floating around the web as well, with the DLSS 5 mod bringing more definition to the cartoony look of a Palworld character and altering the intensity of shadows.

Performance Costs and Hardware Compatibility

While the visual adjustments drew heavy discussion online, the early implementation extracts a steep price in system resources, with framerates dropping as much as 50 percent depending on the title and GPU. Testers running Final Fantasy VII Rebirth reported that the mod halves their frames per second and that swapping between presets eats a TON of vram. Another user testing Control on an RTX 5060 saw framerates drop from 86 FPS to 32 FPS, while a separate RTX 5070 Ti test in Control reportedly fell from 71fps to 35fps at 4K, and another demonstration in GTA V showed performance falling from about 90 frames per second to 29 as settings were adjusted.

The software initially appeared to work on Nvidia’s RTX 50-series graphics cards. However, a modder known as Uncle Burrito uploaded a video on YouTube showcasing how he was able to execute the latest DLSS on the RTX 40 series GPUs, such as the GeForce RTX 4090, after the modder found that the CUDA binaries in the leaked file were limited to only RTX 50 GPUs. Uncle Burrito made an experimental patch by swapping the incompatible binaries with the compatible ones for the RTX 40 series, which got the job done and exposed the controls for tweaking the image quality in the game. This simple file exchange allowed the experimental code to run on older hardware, and it reportedly also worked on the RTX 4080, though the modder saw as much as a 39% performance reduction, witnessing the FPS drop from 135. Uncle Burrito says that he doesn’t know if it will work on previous-gen cards as he doesn’t own any RTX 20 or RTX 30 series GPU.

Artistic Integrity Debates and Nvidia’s Response

The leaked files have reignited a broader conversation about artificial intelligence in game design, following audiences almost universally panning the idea when Nvidia revealed DLSS 5 in March of 2026 and calling it the AI slopification of games. When Nvidia posted a video on its YouTube channel showing a compilation of before-and-after comparisons of the AI-powered shader system intended to improve graphics across the board, it prompted debate among players over how heavily AI-generated rendering could alter the original appearance of characters and games and triggered accusations of AI slop and anti-artistic integrity.

NVIDIA Just Broke Gaming: Why DLSS 5 is the "GPT Moment" for Graphics

Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang has defended the technology against concerns about creative control, saying it does not remove developers’ ability to determine their games’ visual direction. Because the current mod relies on unfinished and unofficial code, Nvidia can improve optimization before release so framerates don’t take as steep a plunge, though the filters that make games look like AI slop may not change.

What Lies Ahead for the Official Launch

Modders have continued experimenting with the extracted ‘Neural Rendering’ library in numerous games since the code appeared in the early-access version of NBA 2K27. Audiences continue to evaluate whether the technology will turn into a must-use hidden Nvidia GPU feature or remain a controversial addition as development continues toward the official release.
