Since it is unlikely that Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 5000 graphics cards will arrive this year, its mid-range models could be delayed even further. To make matters worse, the GeForce RTX 40 series was rumored to face a price increase due to a shortage of GDDR6X memory. However, Nvidia has other plans for its Ada Lovelace-based GPU, as confirmed by leaker X @Zed__Wang.

Apparently, Nvidia is prepping a GeForce RTX 4070 variant with 20 Gbps GDDR6 VRAM instead of GDDR6X with a PG141 347 PCB. This is only marginally slower than the 21 Gbps GDDR6X memory found in the normal RTX 4070, so the performance loss will be minimal. It remains to be seen whether this will come with a corresponding price cut.

It is unclear whether other SKUs in the RTX 4070 family, such as the RTX 4070 Super, RTX 4070 Ti, and RTX 4070 Ti Super will be affected by this GDDR6X memory shortage. In any case, if you are in the market for a mid-range graphics card, you might as well wait until CES 2025, where AMD is expected to unveil its next-generation Radeon GPUs that are supposedly performing on par with the RTX 4070 SKUs.
