Data Analytics Unit: The Engine of Modernization
The Data analyst position resides within the Bureau of Planning and Strategic Initiatives (PSI), specifically the Data analytics Unit (DAU). Under the leadership of the PSI’s Office of Planning and Analytics, the DAU is central to NYC Aging’s ongoing efforts to modernize its data and technology infrastructure.”The DAU plays a key role in enabling us to track progress and plan for the future of aging services,” a senior official stated. The unit is responsible for producing a wide range of data reports and analyses used by NYC Aging, its service providers, and oversight agencies.
Core Responsibilities: From Data Wrangling to Strategic Insights
The Data Analyst will be instrumental in maintaining, developing, and designing data reports to support provider monitoring and informed decision-making. Key responsibilities include data extraction, cleaning, and validation, ensuring the accuracy and consistency of data used to assess program effectiveness. The role also demands in-depth analysis of NYC Aging programs, translating complex data into clear and concise presentations and reports tailored for diverse audiences.
Effective communication is paramount. The Data Analyst will collaborate closely with program staff, senior leadership, and external partners to collect, analyze, and interpret data related to service provision. This collaboration will directly contribute to the advancement of new, data-driven programs and policies designed to help older New Yorkers thrive in their communities or receive safe and supportive care at home. The position requires adaptability and the ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced habitat.
Specific duties include:
- Utilizing coding and programming platforms – including SQL, Tableau, and Python – to extract data from NYC Aging’s various sources.
- implementing rigorous data quality checks and processes to maintain data integrity.
- Responding to information requests regarding programs and services.
- Generating reports and analyses to evaluate program performance and address specific inquiries.
- Creating compelling visualizations – including charts, graphs, maps, and data models – for internal and external presentations.
Qualifications and Skills
The position is classified as a City Research Scientist – 21744. Minimum qualifications require a master’s degree in a relevant field – physical, biological, or environmental science, public health, or a related social science. Candidates may also qualify with a doctorate in a related field and one year of relevant experience, or three years of full-time research experience with a master’s degree. A probationary period of one year applies to all appointments.
Strong coding and programming skills, along with experience using data management software like SQL, Tableau, and Python, are highly preferred.
