Oakland Man Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-Run Incident

An Oakland man has been arrested after allegedly fleeing the scene of a hit-and-run that resulted in the deaths of two people and the injury of another. The incident occurred on Sunday morning, prompting a swift response from Oakland police officers.

Police were called to the crash site at the intersection of 73rd Avenue and Holly Street at around 10 a.m. Upon arrival, they discovered a heavily damaged Lexus sedan and an overturned Lexus SUV carrying three victims. According to Oakland Police Department (OPD) spokesperson Kim Armstead, the sedan had been reported stolen in Daly City.

The driver of the sedan fled the scene before authorities arrived, but was apprehended later. The suspect, a 25-year-old Oakland man, was arrested on suspicion of committing the fatal hit-and-run. The identity of the driver has not yet been released by the police, and jail booking records are not currently available.

Tragically, two of the SUV passengers, a 64-year-old man from Richmond and a 67-year-old woman from Antioch, were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. The third victim, a 48-year-old man from Richmond, was transported to a local hospital for treatment.

Eyewitnesses at the scene informed officers that the driver had fled on foot after the crash. Subsequently, the suspect was detained and arrested at an undisclosed location.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities trying to determine if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the incident. The collision occurred when the stolen sedan was speeding down 73rd Avenue and collided with the SUV, which was making a turn from 73rd Avenue onto Holly Street. The impact of the collision caused the SUV to roll over and collide with a parked car.

If anyone has any information regarding the incident, they are encouraged to contact the OPD’s traffic investigation unit at 510-777-8570.

The community is left in shock and mourning following this tragic event. Finding justice for the victims and ensuring the safety of Oakland’s streets remains a top priority for local law enforcement.
