Oakland marijuana Facility Burglaries lead to Federal Indictment in Officer’s Death

A federal grand jury has indicted nine individuals on charges of drug trafficking adn conspiracy stemming from a series of armed burglaries at a marijuana grow facility in Oakland, California, in December 2023. Teh incidents culminated in the fatal shooting of Officer Tuan Le of the Oakland Police Department, according to court documents unsealed on Thursday.
Deadly Third Attempt at Waterfront Facility
Federal prosecutors allege that between December 29, 2023, and the early hours of December 30, 2023, the group targeted a waterfront grow facility on embarcadero in Oakland, successfully stealing at least 100 marijuana plants during two initial burglaries. Though, it was their third attempt that proved catastrophic. Shortly before 4:30 a.m., as the group returned to the facility, Oakland police officers responded to the scene.
Officer le and his partner, operating in an unmarked white truck, arrived to find individuals fleeing toward vehicles. According to the indictment, one person – identified only as “co-conspirator 1” – brandished a black pistol during the escape. A subsequent chase ensued, during which the suspects fired upon the officers.
Officer Le Fatally Shot During Pursuit
Allen Brown was driving one of the vehicles pursued by Officer Le and other responding officers. the indictment states that the passenger, co-conspirator 1, discharged at least 20 shots into Officer Le’s truck, fatally striking the 36-year-old officer.Officer Le was pronounced dead at Highland Hospital.
Charges and Allegations
Allen Brown,Sebron Russell,and Marquise Cooper are accused of organizing the armed burglaries and recruiting Janiero Booth,Jowaun Jones,Shawn McGee,and Salvador Munguia to participate. All seven men are charged with conspiring to distribute, possessing with intent to distribute, and attempting to possess with intent to distribute more then 100 marijuana plants. brown faces additional charges for discharging a firearm during a drug trafficking crime, while Russell is charged with brandishing a firearm.
Additionally, Jasmine Kumar, the girlfriend of the suspected gunman, and her mother, Felicia Sanders, have been charged with being accessories after the fact.Prosecutors allege they assisted in preventing the gunman’s apprehension, including purchasing a one-way plane ticket for him, according to the Department of Justice.
Legal Proceedings and Prior charges
All nine defendants are currently in custody and made their initial appearance in federal district court in San Francisco on Thursday. Bail hearings are scheduled for Monday.
Alameda County prosecutors previously charged Cooper, Brown, russell, and Mark Sanders with murder in connection with Officer Le’s death. However, the murder charge against Cooper was dismissed after a judge persistent there was insufficient evidence to proceed. Brown, Russell, and Sanders have pleaded not guilty to the remaining charges, according to court records.
