Ovarian cancer: women in these professions are particularly at risk
A recent study conducted by the University of Montreal in Canada has revealed a potential link between certain professions and an increased risk of ovarian cancer. The study, which involved 491 ovarian cancer patients and almost 900 healthy women, focused on occupational factors and other biographical information.
According to the findings, women who have not given birth to children, are infertile, or are of advanced age statistically have an increased risk of developing ovarian tumors. While genetic predispositions are believed to play a role in this, researchers have been unable to identify any specific environmental factors contributing to the disease.
However, the study now suggests that the work environment may have potential influences on the development of ovarian cancer. Specifically, beauticians and hairdressers who have been working in their profession for more than ten years were found to have approximately three times higher risk of the disease compared to individuals in other occupations.
The research also highlighted the presence of a significant number of cases among women in retail, construction, and clothing-related professions. Additionally, it was observed that affected women often had fewer or no children and used oral contraceptives for shorter periods compared to their healthy counterparts.
These findings demonstrate the importance of raising awareness among women in these specific professions about the potential risks associated with ovarian cancer. It is crucial for individuals working in these industries to closely monitor their health, undergo regular screenings, and consult with healthcare professionals for early detection and intervention.
