(ANSA) – TRIESTE, 28 AUG – The Ministry of University and Research has selected Alessandra Giorgetti, head of the National Oceanographic Data Centre of the OGS, to join the group of experts of the EU Member States on ocean observation, “thanks to her long-standing commitment and her vast experience in the management of marine data”.
The OGS made this known.
Since this year, the European Commission has been working to develop a common EU approach to planning sea and ocean observation activities. The aim is to collect data once and use it for multiple purposes and to support and advise the Commission. “I will enthusiastically participate in the activities of this group – says Giorgetti – which brings together experts with whom I have worked successfully for decades to coordinate the management of marine data and metadata, as well as their transparency and accessibility”.
Giorgetti is a senior expert in marine data management.
For nine years she was deputy director of the Oceanography section of OGS and since 2004 she has led the Marine Data Center of the organization: the Italian hub of the Unesco network of national oceanographic data centers. Giorgetti is also the national delegate for the International System of Data and Information Exchange of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of Unesco.
Thirty-two experts from 17 countries attended the first hybrid meeting of the Group for the Observation of Seas and Oceans, on 25 June in Brussels. The EC presented the results of a public consultation that highlighted the obstacles to effective monitoring. These include fragmented and opaque planning, inadequate allocation of responsibilities and resources, slow innovation, uncertain funding, uneven distribution of efforts, and the lack of standardized operating procedures. They also shared the need for EU action to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of marine observation, starting with the development of a common digital platform. The next meeting is scheduled for December. (ANSA).
