October 29 is World Stroke Day.

A stroke is an acute disruption of blood circulation in the brain. It is one of the leading causes of death and disability worldwide. Common symptoms of the disease are: sudden contortion of the face, weakness in the arm or leg, most often on one side of the body, sudden clouding of consciousness, speech problems, sudden visual disturbance, sudden disturbance in walking and balance, dizziness, severe headache for no reason.

It is very important to contact the emergency service as soon as possible, which will ensure the effectiveness of treatment and recovery.

Disease prevention is based on the basic principles of a healthy lifestyle, which are blood pressure control, smoking cessation, salt restriction, blood cholesterol control, and sufficient physical activity. Uncontrollable risk factors are age, sex, hereditary or genetic predisposition.

Since 2019, the Ministry of Health has been implementing the program for the organization of thrombolytic treatment and mechanical thrombectomy services for acute ischemic strokes in order to reduce mortality and disability. Since its launch, around 1,800 patients have received medical care. The program operates in 3 medical organizations of Yerevan and in order to make services more accessible for the population of the region, starting this year also in Gyumri Medical Center.

All groups of the population benefit from the right to treatment of acute or subacute ischemic strokes with the latest and most expensive technologies within the framework of free medical care and services guaranteed by the state.

The basis for inclusion in the program is the diagnosis of “acute and/or subacute ischemic stroke” in the patient within 24 hours from the moment of the appearance of clinical signs of ischemic stroke, including the transfer period.
