Juvenile Brazilian reef octopuses adjust their defensive behavior depending on whether approaching fish are territorial, researchers discovered in a study published July 31 in Behavioural Processes. The animals deploy rapid arm slaps, color changes, and flinches against aggressive rivals while reacting differently to nonterritorial species.

While eight-armed cephalopods might seem to hold an unfair advantage in an underwater squabble, new scientific findings show their aggressive displays are far more discriminating than a simple, indiscriminate lashing out. Researchers observing marine life in shallow waters along the northeastern coast of Brazil and surrounding oceanic islands recorded 101 distinct interactions between juvenile Brazilian reef octopuses and 10 species of reef fish. To capture the footage, the research team snorkeled in shallow water and filmed juvenile octopuses without disturbing their normal behavior. The clear water at their study sites sometimes offered visibility of around 66 feet (20 meters), giving the researchers a broad view of the underwater environment. Rather than treating all nearby swimmers with the same hostility, these young hunters tailor their tactical responses to match the specific intent of their aquatic neighbors. The study followed 38 individual juvenile specimens as they moved across the reef in search of food.

Territorial Clashes and the Defensive Arm Slap

The tension ramps up significantly when territorial fish enter the picture. Species such as damselfish from the family Pomacentridae actively attempt to drive the young cephalopods away from contested areas. These encounters involve rapid, confrontational movements where the fish perform quick jabs and swipes at the octopuses.

In response, the juvenile octopuses do not simply flee. They deploy an array of calculated defensive maneuvers, including physical arm slaps and sudden flinches. These conflicts tend to be brief and intense, averaging roughly 14 seconds in duration. The arm-slap behavior itself isn’t new to science, as researchers have described octopuses striking or swiping at fish in previous observations, but the new study provides a more systematic look at when the behavior occurs and what happens around it.

Jennifer Mather, study co-author and octopus behavior researcher, stated that the territorial fish are really going to do one thing, and the nonterritorial fish are doing other things.

The study also captured a distinct visual strategy during these heated territory disputes. Researchers documented a pattern they termed half-blotch, in which the octopus visually splits its skin, displaying circular white spots exclusively on the side facing the approaching rival. Because some fish appeared to retreat after this transformation occurred, the scientific team suggests it functions as a deliberate warning signal.

Contrasting Encounters with Nonterritorial Species

The dynamic shifts entirely when the surrounding fish lack territorial motives. When interacting with nonterritorial species like the blue tang (Acanthurus coeruleus), the encounters last considerably longer, averaging about 46 seconds.

Instead of throwing punches or flashing warning colors, the octopuses continue their hunt undisturbed. The trailing fish often circle or follow the octopus to take advantage of the active foraging, free from the rapid strikes that characterize disputes over coral patches.

Using a statistical method known as lag-sequence analysis, the research team confirmed that distinct, predictable behavioral patterns govern both types of encounters. The data underscores that these aquatic squabbles follow structured behavioral sequences rather than random chaos.

Field Observations and Individual Personalities

Beyond documenting tactical responses, the observations revealed clear individual differences among the juvenile Octopus insularis specimens. Some specimens displayed timid tendencies, while others reacted with much higher intensity during fish encounters.

The young animals also displayed an inquisitive streak toward their human observers, showing curiosity toward the researchers and their cameras.

One of the young cephalopods even managed to seize a diving weight and carry it directly back to its shelter. Scientists have yet to determine whether these distinct personality traits remain consistent over time or vary by age and sex. Nevertheless, the systematic recording of these underwater bouts demonstrates that the interactions represent flexible, calculated decisions made by sophisticated marine hunters.
