Oelder Damian shop asks for donations for lepers

by time news

On the occasion of World Leprosy Day on January 29th, the Oelder Damian shop is asking for donations. There is also an exhibition on the subject.

Oelde (gl) – At the end of January, according to the Damian Oelde One World Association, neglected tropical diseases will be the focus of public attention. Because one in five people in 149 countries worldwide is still affected or threatened by these diseases – especially women and children in southern countries, writes the association.

draw attention to leprosy

Leprosy is also one of the diseases, and so the one-world association takes the World Leprosy Day on Sunday, January 29th as an opportunity, together with the German Leprosy and Tuberculosis Aid and the churches in Oelde, to focus on many parts of this to bring the still unconquered disease to the attention of the world. If left untreated, leprosy causes unnoticed injuries, inflammation and irreversible damage to hands, feet or eyes.

According to the report, two to three million people are affected by leprosy-related disabilities and are dependent on help for the rest of their lives. “Unfortunately, those affected are very often stigmatized and discriminated against, because leprosy is a ‘visible’ disease,” writes the association. Antibiotic therapy that can cure leprosy and prophylactic drugs have been around since 1983. But in poorer countries, few could afford them.

Donation box is set up

Therefore, a donation box is now available in the Damian shop at Lange Straße 36 in Oelde to collect money. There will also be a photo exhibition on the subject. The donations, also from the church collection on World Leprosy Sunday, support projects to carry out quick diagnoses, free medication, effective prevention and accompanying research.
