In total, from December 20 to December 26, the VP has conducted 32,212 checks of vehicle drivers throughout Latvia, catching 99 drunk drivers and four drivers under the influence of narcotic substances.
The most drivers were caught under the influence of alcohol on December 25, or the First Christmas, when alcohol was found in the body of 20 vehicle drivers, one more was driving under the influence of narcotics, and one refused to blow in the breathalyzer.
Evaluating the concentration of alcohol in the bodies of drunk drivers, it can be seen that the most frequently caught drivers are under the influence of alcohol, i.e. above 1.5 parts per million, for which criminal liability is provided. There were 50 such drivers. Then follows the group of “low blood alcohol levels” – from 0.5 to 1 blood alcohol level. 31 drivers were caught in this state of intoxication. On the other hand, the least number of drunk drivers – 16 – were under the influence of 1 to 1.5 parts per million.
Analyzing the age of the drivers, drivers aged 31 to 50 were most affected by prohibited substances, followed by drivers under 30, and drivers over 50 the least.
The State Police promises to continue intensifying traffic control throughout Latvia until January 2 next year, as well as to ensure public order in public celebration places.
The police call on every road user to be responsible and protect themselves and others from the consequences of reckless behavior. Law enforcement officers remind that the attitude of fellow citizens can play a decisive role in preventing an accident, so you should not remain indifferent, but report cases when a driver tries to drive a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicating substances.
