The utilization of office space in Germany has fallen significantly as a result of the introduction of home office regulations. This is reported by the management consultancy Combine Consulting after extensive measurements.

Over a period of ten years, the company measured office presence at around 17,000 workplaces in Germany. To do this, over a period of at least two weeks, 357,000 measurements were taken at intervals of one to two hours to determine how many people were actually in the office.

Utilization at 41.1 percent

For the pre-pandemic period, the data shows office attendance ranging from 55.3 to 59.7 percent, depending on the year. During the pandemic, this dropped to less than 20 percent. So far this year it has been 41.1 percent.

Conference rooms are particularly underutilized, with occupancy falling from 40 to around 7 percent. For the first time this year there is a strong differentiation according to the days of the week; Monday and Friday would have developed into home office days.

The management consultancy warned companies to now use this experience one-to-one to reduce space; rather, one must do justice to the complex requirements of the new world of work.
