Additional designation of independent public law organizations
Yoon, to Lee Jong-chan, “I didn’t know you would do this…”
Wild: “Yoon’s coup destroys the legitimacy of the Republic of Korea”

Even after the Liberation Day ceremony was held for the first time ever on the 15th in a split manner, the aftermath continues. On the 16th, the Office of the President stated, “The subject of the independence movement and liberation is not only the Gwangbokhoe.” This suggests that they are even leaving open the possibility of additional designation of public organizations in the field of independence, clearly stating their intention not to back down on this issue. On the other hand, Park Chan-dae, the acting leader and floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized at the party’s Supreme Council meeting that day, “President Yoon Seok-yeol is forcing a historical coup that destroys the identity and legitimacy of the Republic of Korea.”

A senior official in the presidential office criticized the group in a phone call with the Dong-A Ilbo that day, saying, “We should not think that the independence movement and the subjects of liberation are the exclusive rights of the Gwangbokhoe,” and “It is personal use to move the group due to personal dissatisfaction and anger about the president’s personnel authority.” He continued, “It is excessive for the Gwangbokhoe to say that it will not participate in the national commemorative event due to personal feelings.” It was also reported that President Yoon Seok-yeol expressed bewilderment at the luncheon with his staff after the Liberation Day event the day before, saying, “I didn’t know it would go this far.”

Currently, there are a total of 17 public legal organizations under the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs (10 related to patriotism, 6 related to democracy, and 1 related to independence), and among them, only the Gwangbokhoe is in the field of independence. The Gwangbokhoe receives about 3 billion won in government budget support every year. Other independence movement organizations, such as the Bereaved Families of Patriots and Patriots Association, have been requesting the additional designation of public legal organizations in the field of independence, but it has reportedly not made any progress due to reasons such as revisions to laws and regulations. However, there is speculation that the government may designate additional public legal organizations in the field of independence as a result of this controversy. A government source said, “The atmosphere is that it is difficult to accept that the Gwangbokhoe, the only public legal organization related to independence that receives government budget support, has abandoned its obligation of political neutrality.”

Meanwhile, it has been reported that criticism is being raised within the Gwangbokhoe regarding the attendance of many opposition politicians at the Gwangbokhoe-hosted Gwangbokjeol commemoration ceremony held at the Baekbeom Memorial Hall in Yongsan-gu, Seoul the previous day. A member of the Gwangbokhoe pointed out in a phone call, “It is not an issue that can be overlooked that an event that should unite the people to honor the noble sacrifice and will of our independence fighters has turned into a rally to condemn the government in sympathy with opposition politicians.”

Meanwhile, it was revealed that Kim Hyung-seok, the new director of the Independence Hall of Korea, whom the Gwangbokhoe calls the “New Right” and demands his resignation, had been fined 5 million won for illegally receiving aid to North Korea while serving as the chairman of the Korean Welfare Foundation, a private organization supporting North Korea. However, the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs, the organization above the Independence Hall of Korea, said on the same day, “According to the National Civil Service Act, a fine does not constitute a disqualification for appointment as director.”
